Residency is a link, not a document

A worker's residency hangs on their work permit, the permit hangs on the company's standing with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority, and that standing hangs on the commercial registration. Anyone trying to renew a stalled residency should therefore start at the top of the chain rather than at the residency itself.

After the residency comes the identity card, and after that the residencies of any dependants the worker has brought. Their dates all belong in one calendar rather than scattered across several.

Renewal and its period

Timing: Before the residency expires, not after. What follows expiry is not a renewal but the settling of an irregular position.
Period: Three working days from the point the documents are in order.
Documents: A passport with sufficient remaining validity, proof of the permit, and whatever examination or insurance the authority requires.

Remaining passport validity is a condition, not a detail. A passport falling short at the time of filing returns the application however sound the rest of the file is, so the passport date is checked before the residency date rather than alongside it.

What blocks a renewal

Unsettled monthly fees against the company with the authority.
A commercial registration that has lapsed or been suspended.
A work permit left unrenewed, since the residency follows it.
A passport whose remaining validity falls short.
A standing violation against the company's file, halting its transactions.

A new passport

When a worker renews their passport, the residency details do not move to it on their own. The residency is tied to the old passport number, and until the record is updated there is a divergence between what the worker carries and what is recorded against them.

Updating the record is a short procedure, but overlooking it surfaces late and in the worst places: at travel, at the identity card renewal, or in a transaction for a family member.

Records that agree with one another

A worker's details sit with more than one authority: Passports and Residence, the Labour Market Regulatory Authority, and the Information and eGovernment Authority for the identity card. Any divergence between them, down to a letter in a name or a digit in a passport number, halts the transaction at the first authority that checks.

Update the passport number across every record after a renewal, not in one of them.
Write the name exactly as it appears in the passport, letter for letter, not as it is pronounced.
Check that the records agree before any significant procedure, such as a transfer or bringing in family.
